So now, pets can chose our partially fenced and graveled area as well as nearly a half acre of green lawn to roam and explore, or to play a game of fetch. Both areas are equipped with a Pet Waste Station for easy cleanup.

Your Ride to the Wild Side

The Redwood & Hyperion Suites is proud to announce that we are now one of five pick-up locations for the Wildlife Images Expedition Transport. This unique guided excursion provides a ride out to Wildlife Images on the Expedition Transport. Once at Wildlife Images you will have an exciting and educational tour of the Wildlife Sanctuary. Round trip from the motel is about 2 1/2 hours.

The Expedition Transport runs seven days a week from June 29th until Sept 16th. The cost is: Adults $15 – Kids 4-17 $10 – Kids 3 and under Free!

Pet Friendly Grants Pass

As a loving pet parent I know how hard it can be to leave an important member of the family behind when you travel. There is no need to fret if your destination is Grants Pass, OR. Here’s a list of my favorite things to do when we travel through Grants Pass with our 3 year old Jack Russell Terrier, Digit.

Clean things up at the Self Service Dog Wash

Dogs of all sizes can make use of the Soggy Dog Self Service Dog Wash. A self-serve dog wash facility offering dog grooming services and supplies to the Grants Pass, OR area. They have all the stuff you need to give your dog a good scrub down. A professional groomer is always present to assist you or take over the dog wash completely.

Take a shopping trip to the Pet Store

Dogs on a leash are welcome at the Mini Pet Mart on 6th Street. Take your canine companion shopping. You’ll find they have a full line of pet foods and supplies. Pick up a new toy or stock up on your favorite treats. Family owned and operated since 1978 stop in and check it out. Let their knowledgeable staff take care of both you and your pet.

Run around at the Dog Park

Head over to Schroeder Park. Your leashed pet is welcome in most areas of the 24.0 acre park located along the Rogue River. In addition to a tennis court, basketball court and baseball field Schroeder Park now has a Dog Park. Enjoy some off-the-leash fun with your pet inside the new Dog Park. $2 Day Use Pass is required to visit this Josephine County Park.

Take your dog with you down the Rogue River

We never miss our annual Rogue River rafting trip with our friends Ferron and Pupeye from Ferron’s Fun Trips. Float down the Rogue River and enjoy the beautiful scenery of Southern Oregon. Pupeye is always happy to have company so your pet doesn’t have to be left behind. They’ll provide both you and your pet with all the equipment you need to stay afloat.

Wine Review: Schmidt Family 2008 Syrah

Hey there Southern Oregon wine lovers! Last night I tried the Schmidt Family Vineyard 2008 Syrah.

It is really nice stuff. The color is bright ruby and smells like cinnamon and spice. I thought the wine was super juicy and tasted like mature dark fruits and black pepper. My wife thought it was, “spicy, but in a good way.” I decanted the wine and it only got better after time, but it was actually very good right from the start. I would highly recommend you try this wine and any other wines from Schmidt.

If you have never been to Schmidt Family Vineyards, it is a super nice place to visit. The grounds and tasting room are beautiful. I really like the fact that they have a basket of toys for children if you bring them. I’m guilty of dragging my kids on a number of wine trips and really appreciate it when a wine room has a small something to distract my kids for at least 15-20 minutes. The winery is family owned and run by Cal and Judy Schmidt. The winery is in the Applegate Valley and the Schmidt vines were first planted in 2001. I especially like their Zinfandels and their 2008 Soulea. The 2008 Soulea is a pleasing combination of 20% Cabernet, 50% Merlot, and 30% Syrah. I know that Merlot is not the trend these days but the one at Schmidt is awesome. As for their white wines, the Perennial white is also really good and so is the Gewurztraminer. If you are someone who normally doesn’t like Gewurztraminer, I would strongly encourage you to try this one.

How To: Wine Tasting

One of the greatest qualities of wine tasting in Southern Oregon is its relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Unlike the super fancy and intimidating wine rooms you will find in Napa Valley and Sonoma, Southern Oregon wineries offer a place to taste and ask questions without feeling self conscious. While tasting wine in Southern Oregon you will find many “mom and pop” wineries and because of this, there is a good chance you might meet and talk with the actual owners and wine makers. But please don’t let this opportunity intimidate you. If you follow my advice, by reading these basic tips on how to taste wine, I am confident that your next wine tasting experience will make you feel like a pro.

1 The first things to do when you are poured a taste of wine is too look at the color with your eyes. Tilt the glass at a 45 degree angle and look at the color against a white background. Is the wine brilliant, clear or hazy? Is it pale or intense? White wine colors to look for can be: green tinge, straw, gold, or amber. Red wine colors can be: purple, ruby, garnet, brick, amber, dark, or inky. Many people talk about looking for the legs of a wine. This is the wine that runs down the inside of the glass to the bottom. If the legs are pronounced, this usually means the wine has more alcohol content and a fuller body.

Sniff

2 The next step to tasting wine is smelling the wine. Swirl the wine in the glass and then put your nose inside the glass and take two or three sniffs to smell for aromas. Try to smell the wine from the middle of the glass. If you smell from the bottom of the rim you will smell more fruit and from the top more of the alcohol. Are the aromas faint or intense? White wine aromas might smell like: white, yellow, and orange fruits. Red wine aromas might smell like: red and purple fruits. Both red and white wines aromas can share aromas: floral, herbal, mineral and spice. Wine matured in oak can have aromas that smell like: spice, vanilla, smoke, cedar, and of course oak.

Sip

3 Now it’s time to actually taste the wine. First take a small amount of wine into your mouth, then swish the liquid around, bringing it into contact with every part of your mouth. Some people like to suck in a little air while the wine is still in your mouth to let the air “open” the wine and enhance the taste. While you are tasting the wine you can ask yourself, what is the body of the wine like? Does it fill your mouth? Is the wine light, medium, or heavy? Think of fat free milk vs. heavy cream. What are the flavors you are tasting? Do the flavors taste like something you recognize: blueberry, cherry, cola, strawberry, lemon, peach, grapefruit? Does the wine taste rich, thick, sweet, dry, crisp, tart? Do you like the taste?

Summarize

4 After you taste the wine you must now decide to swallow or spit. If you are a real pro and have a long day of tasting ahead, spitting might be a good idea. I wouldn’t know, I’m not a pro and always drink the wine. After you have swallowed or spitted it is time to think about or record your overall impressions of the wine. Most importantly, DO YOU LIKE IT? Is this a wine you would buy or not? Do you love it or hate it? People always ask, “How do I know if it’s good wine?” My response is usually, “If you like it then it is good wine!” You can also ask yourself: Do I like the way the wine lasts in my mouth? What kind of flavors lingered after you swallowed? Don’t forget to consider price too. Considering the price, how good is the wine?

I hope these 4 simple steps help you feel more confident the next time you are tasting wine. Of course this is just a simple guide and you can read entire books about wine and the tasting experience. Don’t forget that you are the only person who knows what you like and that is what’s most important. ENJOY!!
